Aneesh Chopra named as First Chief Technology Officer by President Obama

Aneesh Chopra, current Secretary of Technology for Virginia has been named by Obama as the Chief Technology Officer. The CTO position is linked with that of the Chief Information Officer, Vivek Kundra was named as the CIO just a few days back, but they are two distinct jobs. The White House explains the difference as

The responsibilities of the CIO are to use information technology to transform the ways in which the government does business. The CTO will develop national strategies for using advanced technologies to transform our economy and our society, such as fostering private sector innovation, reducing administrative costs and medical errors using health IT, and using technology to change the way teachers teach and students learn.

In the latest youtube video ( embedded below) , President Obama has listed health care and education as the two areas most requiring the efforts of the CIO and CTO. Therefore now Kundra and Chopra, both will have to work together closely, getting the plan executed well as per the vision of Obama.

Chopra’s achievements are known to be forward looking and he has been able to use Web 2.0, social networking, open source in the best practical ways. He has been able to execute the strategy using the best tools we have in the best way he can.

Our best wishes with Chopra and it will certainly be interesting to see how he manages with the resources of the government.
